Definitely no more than 150 to 200 dollars. I know for sure its 300 for a timing chain which involves a lot more work. Make sure you do some research and talk to some car guys before you take it somewhere on where a good place is. Best bet is to find a guy who does side work. How does it cost ( the labor) to change the timing belt on a 1996 Toyota Avalon?
it takes them about 30 minutes to change a belt. the money you pay for labor is the money you're paying not only to the mechanic, but to the salesperson, to the manager, the payroll clerk, electricity, utilities, and any other overhead costs they might have incurred in taking your order. also, the 30 minutes that it takes the mechanic to change your belt, he could be doing other things. like fixing someone else's car. so you're paying for the mechanic to fix your car as opposed to anyone else's.

and the year of the car doesnt matter. the time it takes for the mechanic is going to be about the same. whether it's a 1996 avalon or 2006.
