Definitely do it at the recommended 60,000 or if you or an Auto Technician check the belt by removing the cover to see if it is worn or loose to decided just how soon. I believe this is also an Interference Motor. Which means, if the Timing Belt is neglected and it breaks, the valves could hit the Piston and the Valves could bend. Then you are looking at a costly repair, and either a new donor head, or a trip to the machine shop. But when you do get this done, definitely do the Water Pump as well, and have the Techs look at the Bearings for Idler Pulleys on your Serpentine Belt, and have the Serpentine Belt replaced as well. All these things (if broken) all have to be taken apart together regardless, and involve the same work, so you should have it all checked and replaced anyway to avoid much worse and more costly repairs down the line. How long until its necessary to change the timing belt on a 99 honda civic ex?
50,000 miles is when I stress to replace all timing belts. Some automakers say 60,000 miles some even has listed 100,000 miles but odds are by 50,000 miles you should either be replacing it or keeping an eye on it.

Like with just about all import engines they are interference engines. Which means if a valve is open which if the engine is running when the belt brakes you will have atleast 2 valves open on a 4 cylinder which would lead to the piston slapping the valve.

When the belt brakes and the piston hits those valves the valve will first punch a hole in the head of the piston requiring the block to be pulled for the bottom end to be taken apart to replace the pistons. The pistons will also bend the valves which will require you to get new valves, new valve guides and possibly new head/heads because odds are that valve stem will be pushed sideways and will cause fractures in the aluminum/cast iron head.
60,000 and I usually tell the customer to replace the water pump at the same time, all it costs is the part extra, no additional labor.
Honda normally recommends replacing the timing belt at 60,000 miles
we use km here and it says 100,000, so i guess it's about 65,000 for miles...

What is the indication that I have to change the timing belt for daihatsu 96 model and how much?

should be changed at 100k not 60 k shes lost her mindWhat is the indication that I have to change the timing belt for daihatsu 96 model and how much?
Mileage is the ONLY indicator - timing belt failure will leave you stranded with absolutely no previous symptoms.

Most manufacturers recommend the change at 60,000 miles. Check your owners manual for the maintenance schedule on your particular model to be sure.

Added: Lost my mind?

';The timing belt must be changed every 60,000 miles. Although the California Owner's Manual says 105,000 miles, this is just to satisfy a state requirement that says timing belts should last 100,000 miles or more.';

';The average life of a timing belt is 60,000-90,000 miles. ...';

Sooooo.....if you want to drive on borrowed time, go ahead, wait for 100,000 miles. It's been my experience that you won't make it.What is the indication that I have to change the timing belt for daihatsu 96 model and how much?
There's really not any usual indication on most vehicles. The exception is if a belt is ';loose'; and jumps a gear tooth. Then you would get a rough idle and rough running engine. If you let the belt break your repair bill will be more than your vehicle is worth if it is an interference engine. Interference means the valves will drop and hit the pistons! Perhaps another person knows if it is an interference engine, most brands are. Cost to replace the belt (and maybe the water pump at the same time) will likely be $350-$650. If the belt breaks, regardless of engine type, you are stuck on the road. Hope this helps!
hahahahaha! Oh Sorry! JJVikings08 made me laugh! He is right it should be changed after 100K miles.

';shes lost her mind'; Hahahahaha!!!

Anyways, since yours is a 1996 model, i take it, that it probably is over the 100K mile mark. S you should get it changed soon, oh and while you are getting it changed, also get the water pump replaced, since they are both near each other, and if you get them done separately it will cost you twice as much.

HondaHow much to change a Timing belt on a 2002 Accord Coupe?
I would say between $400 to $650 give or take another $50 depending whether the dealer does it or an independent mechanic. Just make sure that you get someone who has experience doing it.

Replace every 105,000 miles or 7 years. If you regularly drive in very high temperatures (over 110掳F, 43掳C) or in very low temperatures (under 20掳F, 29掳C) then replace it every 60,000 miles. How much to change a Timing belt on a 2002 Accord Coupe?
Our shop just charged $690 for a timing belt on a 6 cylinder accord. The job also included a new water pump and cam seals. (might as well get those, too, as long as the cover is off).
That depends on what part of the country your from. Philadelphia, Boston, Los Angeles, it will be more expensive. Smaller cities have a cheaper flat rates for jobs like this. You will pay between $300.00 to 400.00 though.

That sound good it would not hurt to set it at 20 to 25 lbs. To set the wrench is to loosen the end nut on the handle part then Twist the handle to where the groove on the wrench itself where it says 15 FT lbs. You will notice the handle has a 0 and | | | | 5 | | | | 10 | | | | and so forth...

Line the dial part or handle to the grove on the body of the wrench where it says 15 plus add the dashes to make 18 which is the 3 dash from 0 turning it to the right. It will be 18 in FT lbs. remember to twist the lock nut on the end so the dial does not turn when torquing on the wrench.

When you tighten the bolt and it reaches the ft lbs you set the wrench at it will make a CLICK sound and you can feel it click too.

practice on a wheel lug nut or some other nut to get a feel for it.

You don't want that tension pulley bolt coming loose. I could not find the specs for the torque but I never used a torque wrench when doing a timing belt.

But your Cog type belts do not require much tension for the belt to stay in place.
are you sure you are up to this ? very expensive mistakes can be made - you should really have a workshop manual .
Get a Haynes manual: You'll need several different torque settings for various nuts %26amp; bolts, as well as a specific procedures for replacing the belt itself.

Your torque wrench should have instructions with it, but usually they're adjusted with a knurled wheel at the end of the handle - the torque setting appears against a mark in a clear 'window' on the handle, or against a mark on a scale at the adjuster.

i own a shop, and getting to the belt isn't too bad of job,but bad enough, the hardest part of though is keeping the top pulley from moving, when you remove the old belt,it will usually jump a notch or two forwards,so on this part of it it may take two people, other than that if you have a good Haynes repair manual on this car,you can do this,it gives all the details on what all has to be done, just take your time with it,that's the key to doing a good job on it,good luck i hope this helps.
Seriously, don't mess with the timing unless you are a trained mechanic. You could end up costing yourself a lot of money.
You should have some pretty solid mechanical abilities. I took mine to a shop and had it replaced prior to the mileage reaching 100,000. It cost $300.00, but that also included a couple hoses that need replacing. Well worth it, if your timing belt goes out on you while you are driving, you pretty much are putting in a new motor because, the innards of the motor keep turning until the motor stops, causing warped valves and rod issues.

Belts stretch over time, and it's better to change it than to have it break on your. Breaking a timing belt, or having it jump time because it is so stretched out can have catastrophic consequences for the motor.

we charge $650 with timing and drive belts, water pump, and coolant flush. all oem honda acura parts.Cost of Changing timing belt on 2004 Acura 2004?
Acura recomends a timing belt and water pump change at 105K miles. They usually charge a few hundred for it. You should call around and get quotes at smaller shops around your area before deciding.
About 750.00 with timing belt and water pump changed.
Don't make the mistake you must change the water pump also.Plus it might also need tensioner, idler pulley guide rails oil seals valve cover gasket with spark plug seals. That the proper way. You might not need all but you will need most. You have about 6 hours labor plus just the pump and belt anti freeze and fan belts in parts about300.00 I Would say worse case a $1000.00 to do it like a pro.
Unless it breaks keep driving it. Acura service protocols are retarded.
The cost will vary, depending on who you have do it, and what part of the country you live in.

I just had to chime in to respond to one of the other posters, to say how retarded it would be to drive that car until the belt breaks. It has an interference fit engine. That means that if the belt breaks, you're looking at a HUGE repair bill.

And 105K is a long time for a timing belt to last. I saw a lot of early Escorts break their timing belts at 40K, when Ford said they should last 50K when they built them. Bent valves, damaged pistons, cracked cylinder heads. What a mess. They really took a bath on that, because they were all under warranty yet.

  • Do i need to change the timing belt on my 1995 ford fiesta? 57k miles, 1.25 engine?

Hey, i know next to nothing about cars, just got my first, a 1995 N reg Ford Fiesta, 1.25 and done 57k miles. Apparently the timing belt needs changing. I've scouted around a few mechanics and a few have even said it wont have a timing belt? Others have mentioned timing chain, and alternator belt? Whats the difference? And should i get it in and changed quick before it fu**s the whole engine up? And most importantly, how much should i be expecting to pay? so i know i'm not getting ripped off...(in the UK). Big cheers for help!!!Do i need to change the timing belt on my 1995 ford fiesta? 57k miles, 1.25 engine?
    ok in order

a 12 year old timing belt may be weak even with the low milage you report. they do degrade with time.

i don't know if it has a belt or chain but its easy to find out. open the hood and look for a sheet metal or plastic belt guard on the front of the engine. [front in this case means the opposite end from the transmission, usually on the right in front wheel drive cars.] under that guard there should be a rubber timing belt belt with tranvsverse grooves in it. it will ride on a large pulley at the top and on the crankshaft at the bottom. a second check would be to open the oil filler cap and look for a camshaft. if you see one you have an overhead cam engine and almost every one made now uses a timing belt. chains are used mostly in single cam V-8 motors. the altenator belt is a single V belt than runs from the crankshaft pulley [ there are usually several stacked on the crank

] to the altenetor and maybe other things like water pump, power steering pump. if it fails the car may be undrivable but no damage usually occures. if you lose the timing belt and you have what is called an interference engine you will total the engine due to the pistons hitting the valves. on a non interference engine nothing will happen except the engine will stop running.

i would have it checked and if needed replace it. cost here in the states is on the order of $50 for parts and $100 labor in my area. it can be a DIY for anyone with some experence.Do i need to change the timing belt on my 1995 ford fiesta? 57k miles, 1.25 engine?
So - is there anyway to know if the timing belt (or timing chain - they do basically the same thing) has been changed prior to now - and when? If not - I'd play it safe and replace it. I bought a for Escort years ago and the timing belt went out when I was driving it and it ended up doing a lot of engine damage and costing me a lot of money.

Sorry - I have no idea what it will cost you these days - but I know that it's cheaper than major engine work.

    Good luck.
That serpentine belt should be changed at or before 60k miles regardless of any inspection. That is what the normal operation for that part is. It is fancy rubber belt that 'snakes' around the front of the block. I had a 1980s Ford Truck with a Mazda Motor in it, that was weird to discover. I was not amazed when I discovered that Ford had the Tool to released the tensioner spring, made for Ford by Ford for Mazda.

I have no idea what motor is in that vehicle, but 60k is the average for Serpentine Belts, pulleys, gaskets, bushings, bearings. Basically a preventative rebuild to keep a car in running condition.
Timing belt is most important and it is a good time to have it changed

Timing belt Vs Timing Chain: They do the same thing but Chain is made of metal like a chain on a bike, and belt is made of nylon (usually for small cars) About $ 70 US

*instalation is highly expensive, but a bad belt can ruin the entire engine

Alternator belt is a small rubber or nylon belt that turns the alternator(generates electricity for battery) usually about 1/2 an inch wide and cost about $15 US not sure in UK but its preaty cheap, the instalation is expensive though

*this one usually squeeqs when bad

I would recomend they check the timing belt to see if its worn

Alternator belt should be easy to change yourself if you want just ask the guy at the auto parts where it is located all you do is take one of and put the other , there is one screw and one tensioner
A timing belt should be changed every 60k miles, a timing chain should be changed probably around every 200k miles.
Bring it to the Ford dealership and expect to pay up to 400 for a timing belt/chain. they can at least roll the 80 dollar inspection in to the labor of what ever needs fixing. Drive safe
well if it seems like ur car is lackin power or is makein a loud sqealing noise or slippin i wouldnt bother with it if its not doin any of them
The easy way to tell if it needs changing is going up a steep hill, if you hear a rattling sound while accelerating up it needs a change. A timing belt is usually a chain similar to one on bycicles, its comes as a set from a parts shop, including all Gaskets. Its not a cheap procedure and its one of the most expensive repairs. Thats why people sell their cars before 100 000 kms.

Dude, you have asked this before. YES! Make sure the rollers, tensioner, H20 pump, thermostat, and coolant are changed. On the topic of coolant, make sure its Audi G12 Red. Any other red G12, will foul sensors.

Definitely change the water pump along with the timing belt. There is very little extra labor, and you don't want it to start leaking (requiring having to do the whole job again) before the next timing belt change, or, even worse, to seize and ruin the belt and your engine. Looks like $600-$900 will cover it all - see the first source.

How big of a pain is it to change the timing belt on a 1998 mitsubishi mirage havent done a front wheel drive?

Not bad if you know what you are doing, but reserve a whole day for it. Make sure you replace any idlers because if one of those fails the timing belt is gone. Also, don't even do the job unless you are going to replace the balance shaft belt and tensioner bearing because that is what is more likely to give trouble than the timing belt would. How big of a pain is it to change the timing belt on a 1998 mitsubishi mirage havent done a front wheel drive?

about 8-10 hours labor fort rained mechanic.
5 hours if you're a mechanically inclined person with the right tools. not much of a pain to do a timing belt itself. the big pain is when you have to take apart nuts and bolts Etc...and put everything back in the right place. It's easier to take things apart than to put them back correctly. make sure you replace the water pump too while you're at it. Took me 4 hours tore place timing belt on my 03 OZ.

if u want to know ur timming is belt open the oil filler cap and run the car if u see back up pressure comming out from there then that's some valves lacking then yeah u will need to change the timming belts , if ur water pump is there too it's better to change it with it too cause they would probably charge u for the water pump and maybe 30-50 dollars extra it's betterso u won't pay 500 dollars just for the water pump when it go bad .... but timming belt are goods for like 75-120000 miles

How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt?

The 2000 honda accord still runs great, but I havn't gotten around to change the timing belt. I am waiting till I have enough cash to buy the water pump and the belt. But I am WAY over due for the timing belt change. Do you think I shouldn't drive the car?How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt?
Get that belt done! Toyota and Honda are the biggest timing belt offenders, but here's the difference. You blow the timing belt on your Toyota, you get towed to the shop and pay for a timing belt replacement. You blow the timing belt on your Honda, you ruin your pistons and valves, so now you're either replacing much of the engine or getting a junkyard engine. The Honda's have what is called an interference engine, which means the pistons crash upward into the heads, damaging internal engine components, the Toyota has a non-interference engine, so the piston stops short of damaging everything. If you completely baby the car while driving, try to keep it running when possible to avoid starting it, and get the freaking timing belt done ASAP, you should be OK, but since its inside the engine, there's no way to know. You might be hanging on by a thread right now or the belt may appear fine. Just get it done, get it done, get it done!!!How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt?
It's not dangerous as in the engine is going to explode and kill everybody in the car, but the old timing belt could snap and the engine could stop running at any time. If that happens, the repair bill could for more than just a belt and water pump. If you don't need to drive the car, I'd recommend you wait until you could get the proper maintenance done on it.
Please be careful. I would highly encourage you to get the timing belt replaced ASAP. We own a 1992 Accord with 223K miles. It already had the timing belt changed out once before. We just recently replaced the timing belt yet again, as well as the water pump, belt, etc. Our car is running well right now. If the belt in your Honda breaks, it will cause major damage to the engine. Please do not drive it until you can get it repaired. If you must drive it, drive it gently until you can get it fixed. Good luck, and God bless!
you should be fine until you have enough cash, its actually smarter to do the water pump with timing belt... so yeah its a 2000, not like its a 1994. just drive in the city so that if the timing belt does snap, stop the car!!! so that the engine parts inside dont get f**ked up.

  • How do you know when to change your car timing belt?

I have a Fiat punto 2002 that wont start. everytime i try starting it, it wont start. It sounds like the fan just switches on. I took it to a garage. They have said the timing belt has gone but i dont see how it is because it has not snapped.

The car mileage is only 28k.How do you know when to change your car timing belt?
i change my belts on every car i buy...yours is missing teath at the bottom....the crank spinns but the reat of the engine stays still...thats not the worst of it..your head/valves could be damaged....How do you know when to change your car timing belt?
You check your owner's manual. Unless something is defective, the belt should be replaced at the manufacturer-specified interval.

Even in the 70s, Fiats had longer timing belt intervals than that. Most modern engines have intervals of at LEAST 60,000 miles, and many are over 100,000.

If your timing belt was out, it would probably do more than ';sound like the fan switches on.'; Depending on what type of engine it has (interference or non-interference) it would either just not work, but should at least turn over, or you'd hear the pistons banging into the valves, pretty much destroying the cylinder head.

Oh, and the timing belt is not a belt that you can see on the outside of the engine. Being so critical to the function and health of the engine, it is encased in its own little cover. Almost every engine that has a timing belt does it like this. You have to actually remove the timing belt cover to see the state of the timing belt. What you're looking at is probably just an alternator, power steering, air conditioning, and possibly fan belt.
Take it to a different mechanic.

Maybe when they said it has gone they meant its worn down too much? I don't know. Mine snapped on me in my first car. I was driving home from work in the middle of winter and had to sit in my car for an hour till the tow truck came. I was on the highway but on a bridge thing (overpass?), my car just all of a sudden quit. I was lucky I was at the top though becuase I was able to coast down the rest of the overpass and get off on the offramp.

The only thing though is when it went it snapped and wrecked my pistons or something. So the whole engine had to be replaced.

Man 28k, sounds low for a timing belt. Yea, I'd get a second opinion. Good luck!

Edit: To the first answers comment: ';If the engine WON'T turn over when you turn the key, its a battery, starter or ignition switch problem.'; I don't think this is true, because when mine snapped it was like my whole car just died. Nothing worked when trying to turn it over.
Try taking it to another garage if you dont think its a proper estimate. You would have to take the valve cover off and check the valve train and the crank position to see if everything is lined up properly. but first I would: 1)Check ignition with spark tester inline with plug 2)Check fuel injection system by spraying intake with starter fluid, if it trys to run, something is wrong with fuel injection system.
The teeth can sheer off the belt, so it isn't snapped but not working.

    Its easy to check.

Take the cam belt cover off (plastic cover)

Turn the engine over, the belt should move as the engine turns over. If it doesn't move when the engine moves, its lost some of its teeth,

Big job to fix as the head may need to come off.

Cam belts should be changed at 50k or 80k or 100k+ it depends on the engine and the type of driving.

    I bet the 28K is 128K on a 2002

If the engine WON'T turn over when you turn the key, its a battery, starter or ignition switch problem.
rubber timing belts either wear out by mileage or by age. its only 28k but its almost 7 years old.

Now i dont know why you even mentioned a fan but you must have had it towed to the garage since it would not start. And did you really see the timing belt?? Because it is located behind a metal shroud,,,,it is not the belt that wraps around the various pulleys on the front of the engine.
The timing belt is usually time, as well as mileage related? And fiat is 5 years or 48,000 milesIf it wont start how did you manage totake it to the garage? The belt may have stripped the teeth and still be in place? Its sounds to me that the problem is the timing belt with the symptoms you are describing?
You need to remove the timing belt covers and try turning over the engine with the key. If the cam and the crank both turn, then the belt has not gone. If however when you remove the cover you find that the belt has snapped then its already to late!

    Ja.
Look at the belt closely for cracks. Those cracks hinder the grip of the belt which may cause either slipping or loss of torque during starting.
if you are sure its not snapped, check it has not slipped due to teeth missing. but from what you describe it does not sound like its the belt.

I am only going to provide a general answer rather than a specific one for the Volvo- assuming all belt driven cam engines are working on the same principle.

    1) remove the engine valve cover to expose the cam gear and belt

    2) rotate the crankshaft by hand to position the #1 cylinder to TDC to facilitate removal of the crankshaft pulley

    3) check for alignment marks on the cam shaft pulley(s) so that when you put in the new belt all is properly aligned.

    4) check for detailed instructions from online volvo forums before attempting this at home.
On some cars you need some special tools. Don't do this work if you don't know much about cars and how an engine works. There are a lot of details to look for, like the sequence of loosening the head bolts etc.

If you're sure you want to tackle it, get an repair manual. Study the section and get all the necessary parts and tools and then take your time doing the repair.

It's not a small job. That's why shops charge about $400 to do it.

Normally, the factory specifies 60000 miles. That's just a money maker for them though. What you don't want to happen is to have it break while you're driving;you'll end up with bent valves!

I have a 2006 renault megane 1.5dci,can anybody tell me how long to change a timing belt,in hours approx.?

I have been quoted some rediculous prices,to replace the timing belt, has anyone any idea how long in labour charges,to replace belt,to the nearest half hour would be good, thanks.I have a 2006 renault megane 1.5dci,can anybody tell me how long to change a timing belt,in hours approx.?
Hi there, 3hrs is the book time for changing a timing belt kit on this type of car, I't doesn't mean that if they garage has prior experience changing this type of belt that they will charge you less. The job involves using special tools correctly to lock your crankshaft and camshafts, so that the belt can be removed and a new belt fitted correctly. I would also take this opportunity to advise that when you change a timing belt, any other associated componants are changed too ie timing belt driven water pump and any tensioners as normally these are affected by the un-tensioning and tensioning of the old and new belts.

Hope the helps.I have a 2006 renault megane 1.5dci,can anybody tell me how long to change a timing belt,in hours approx.?
takes about half an hour if the mechanic really wants to fix it
For a front drive car 5 hours is about the norm
the time quoted by renault is about 3 hours. but to be honest if a garage has changed a few in the past there is no reason why it should take them that long. So at the end of the day a good honest garage would discount any quote they have given if they are interested in doing the work for you, because they will know full well it won't actually take them the 'book time'.
Autodata gives 2.0 hours - this is the system all garages use, so should be 100% accurate.

As a Toyota technician this is a simple job. Even if you don't do it everyday it's fairly easy and straight forward. Be sure and buy a service manual as a guide. The aftermarket books will have this info in them. How long and hard is it to change the timing belt on a 1996 Toyota Tercel? I'm fairly auto savvy.?
It should be fairly simple on a tercel. You will have a lot of room to play with due to the small motor. FYI, you will need some basic screwdrivers, ratchet set, and the main thing, rent a harmonic puller from autozone.

Not sure about your Isuzu, but just had my Honda done and it was $560.How much do you think it costs to change a timing belt on a six-cylinder Isuzu Rodeo?
depends on if it's a timing belt or chain. belts are outside the motor and chains are inside meaning you have to take the motor apart
not to be mean, but the post above is incorrect. some cars have timing belts as timing chains. Mostly imported cars as it is in this case. It will be costly, the part is like 20-50 dollars, but you have to take all the accessories that are power by the engine (Power steering, water pump, alternator and so on). Then you have to take a cover off and change it out then put the new one on. My guess would be about 400-550 dollars. Might want to do an coolent flush at this time as most people forget to do those.

Should i change my timing belt on my 1998 audi a6 2.8 quattro?

i bought a 1998 audi a6 quattro few months ago and i don't know if the timing belt was changed or not? how can i tell? my car now has 104,000 miles on it but when i bought it it had like 94k.i know this is a very important belt to fix otherwise the engine will be screwed!Should i change my timing belt on my 1998 audi a6 2.8 quattro?
YES... unless you are feeling VERY, VERY lucky!!! I have a 99 A6 2.8Q and I am having my TB done this week... it has 59k miles on it.

I also have a VW with 60k miles and the TB has just been done. It has been my experience with VWs and Audis that its best to have the TB done sooner rather than later!! Ive seem what comes after a belt breaks... and the repair costs!!! For me --- its just not worth the gamble...Should i change my timing belt on my 1998 audi a6 2.8 quattro?
Take it to a shop and have them look. They can see if its new or not. DO not take any chances if that belt breaks it cost thousands to fix.

How hard is it to change a water pump on a 02 vw golf 2.0.Do i need special tools?do i change the timing belt?

According to the Gates Belts website (link below), you have an interference type engine whose valves and pistons collide causing major engine damage if the timing belt breaks. The belt is scheduled for replacement at 60,000 mile intervals and the water pump is driven off the timing belt. If you do the job yourself, you'll have no warranty on the work done, whereas a shop will give you at least a 90 day/ 4,000 mile warranty on both the parts and labor. That means you get the job done for free if the parts or workmanship fail soon after installation. However the total cost will be about $600, depending on whether the tensioner pulley and what other parts are replaced and whether you go to the dealer or have an independent shop do the work. How hard is it to change a water pump on a 02 vw golf 2.0.Do i need special tools?do i change the timing belt?
If the pump is driven by the timing belt then you should replace belt and water pump together, it is a lot of work to get in there again so do them together. If you're not an advanced shade tree mechanic, take it in, timing belt/pump replacement is a big job, at the very least be sure to have a shop manual to follow. It is on average a 5 hour job, if not done properly you'll have to do it all over again.

if you don't know what the hell your doing don't **** with it.
You cant see the timing belt. Its behind the front cover. If you are referring to the drive belts, I would replace them if they are in need of changing. The timing belt is a bigger job, should be changed every 90k I believe every car differs though.
I have seldom worked on any hondas, however, the use of underdrive pulleys is old hat in hot rodding. You will undoubtably have to change length of your belt on an accessory drive, but I question your use of an underdrive pulley as being related to a timing belt. Unless both pulleys for crank and cam are changed, it would not be possible for them to stay in time, and changing them both would have no purpose as far as power gain. If I have misunderstood your question, please pardon my interuption. If you are changing an accessory drive that is actually driven from the timing belt(is that actually done on hondas?) then there may be a small change in length, all dependent upon difference of the two diameters and how many degrees of the pulley circle it contacts. Using pi (3.14) times change in diameter divided by the fraction of degrees contacting the pulley should give you the difference in length.
You shouldnt have to mess with the timing chain, but you will have to take off the accessory belts (A/C, power steering, alternator) when changing out the pulley. I would advise you to change the belts if it is necessary, but if your alternator is in working order then dont mess with it. Dont fix what isnt broken.
No you shouldnt have to unless it says so when you get the pulley, u should just need a new belt, they should provide it.
your timing belt replacement is an advanced project and you dont need to do it yourself (leave it to the pros). it is easy to change the pullies. just get or rent or find a clicker torq wrench. but it isnt needed. you should get a friend who will help. it will be more fun with an extra set of hands. it shouldnt take you very long and its a good upgrade. good luck and have fun! get any performance parts off the ';bay'; they will be half price...

  • Cam moved during timing belt change. How Bad?!!?

I was changing the timing belt on a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder. Like an idiot I attempted to tighten the cam sproket, with an impact wrench (after changing the cam seals). Now the cam sproket has moved like six teeth forward. What are the options heafter? Have I bent valves? I took off the valve cover (Passenger side) and ther was crud galore in there. Any Advise is appreciated. Thanks.Cam moved during timing belt change. How Bad?!!?
Valves are pretty tough. I doubt you damaged anything.

Quit using an impact wrench to ASSEMBLE an engine.Cam moved during timing belt change. How Bad?!!?
its fine, just line the timing marks back up and it will be ok..

if its a dual cam, than there should be a notch on both cams so they line up with eatchother, if its a single than there should be a dot or notch to line up with on the block...
If you haven't ran it, just pull the timing belt and reset the cam to the proper position. And change your oil. You might even want to take it to a shop and have them run an engine flush to clean the junk out.
you should be fine. just put your timing marks on the crankshaft, cam shaft and distributor to TDC. then reinstall your timing belt, and turn your engine over by hand to feel if anything is binding. if all is good, start it up. you shouldn't have any problems. if you feel uncomfortable with it, get it towed to a shop.

When should I change my Timing belt?

I have a 1999 plymouth voyager that hass 155,000 miles, and i know i should be changing the timing belt pretty soon, but what i want to know is at what mileage are these timing belts suppose to be changed by?And how much is the cost or more or less what would it cost?and im guessing i would need to change the water pump at the same time..When should I change my Timing belt?
First you have to determine which engine you have.

You can have a 2.4 4 cyl, or a 3.0 V6. Both use a timing belt, and a belt driven water pump.

On 1994 %26amp; prior models, replace at 60,000 mile intervals. On 1995-96 CA vehicles, replacement at 60,000 mile intervals is recommended but not required. On all other models except 1997-99 Caravan, Town %26amp; Country %26amp; Voyager, replace at 100,000 mile intervals (if not previously replaced). On 1997-98 Caravan %26amp; Voyager models, manufacturer does not recommend a specific maintenance interval. On 1999 Caravan %26amp; Voyager models, inspect at 60.000 miles %26amp; replace if required, then inspect again at 90,000 miles and replace if this was not done previously, then inspect again at 120,000 miles.

The 3.3 and 3.8 V6's use a chain which requires replacement only if broken.

Since the belts have to be removed to gain access to the water pump, it is a convenient time to replace it, the thermostat and do a good coolant flush. When should I change my Timing belt?
yeah your slightly overdue...yes replace the water pump as well.

Belst usually last for 60-90 thousand miles..depending..cost is depending on the place you take it to..dealer is around 600 bucks the last time I had one checked on..Im sure its cheaper at your mom and pop shops..
50,000mi is what they suggest. Time for the belt and the water pump.
if it aint broke dont fix it!!
Your water pump as little to do with the water pump but you should change the water pump if your coolant isn't running through the car like it should... But your timing belt should be change if it's slipping and your cam shaft isn't pushing the pushrod correctly and your pistons aren't firing in order...
Most knowledgeable people will recommend changing the water-pump when changing the timing belt, because it's a relatively cheap part, but a lot of labour to change. Most of the work to change the t-belt is also the same work involved in changing the water-pump on most FWD cars. Change the Water Pump too.

60,000 miles or 100,000km is the usual recommended interval.
every 80,000 miles i replace my timeing belt

I have a 2000 toyota yaris 1.3sr its done 70,000 miles and is fine no problems but my friend has a 2003 clio that has 60000 miles on it and his belt went and cost him over 3k to fix the damage. when should i change mine i have heard everything from 90000 to 250000 any idea?

thank youAt how many miles do i have to change the timing belt on my Yaris?
I don't know if my experience with a 1980s' Corolla is applicable, but maybe.

The first recommended change was at 90,000 miles or 120,000 miles, the latter if my memory serves me well. After the first change, Toyota recommends changing it every 60,000 miles. I do the latter (at a big city dealership); however, the local Toyota mechanic has often said that he has never seen any noticeable wear or tear on my timing belt. Nonetheless, I just don't want to take any chances, as I find one significant repair/replacement every 60,000 miles quite acceptable. A Toyota is remarkably troublefree (and may well not leave you stranded until the transmission goes at about 500,000 miles), so the cost of replacing a timing belt every 60,000 miles is inconsequential.

I made a couple of grammatical corrections. At how many miles do i have to change the timing belt on my Yaris?
The 4cyl Toyota Yaris has only been sold in the US since the 2007 model year, and has a timing chain, not a timing belt. My understanding is that previously, the Toyota Echo (4cyl) in the US was the same car as the Yaris in other countries, but even the US 2000-2004 Echo had a timing chain and not a timing belt. There is no prescribed replacement interval for a timing chain. (If it did have a timing belt, for a 1999 or newer the replacement is 90,000 miles or 6 years, whichever occurs first. If older, replace at 60,000 mile intervals.)

    http://www.toyota.com/help/faq-service.h

    expand questions ';Does my vehicle have a timing belt or a timing chain?'; and ';What maintenance is required on my timing belt?';

However, you'd be best to check your owner's manual or service supplement to see what the prescribed maintenance interval is for your Yaris in your specific country, if your 2000 Yaris has a timing belt or chain, and if the service interval is different for your country...
If you are not hearing a screeching sound from your Yaris engine, then you are good, normally when belts are bad you hear a screech from the engine which typically means you should change your belts but have it checked out by a mechanic or a friend who knows about cars. Normally belts last about 115k miles but if you are still unsure have a mechanic check it out
i would change it now, on average u should change it around 70,000, but i wouldnt go over 100k, just play it safe and change it now, then u wont have to worry
typically toyotas are 100K, but check with your dealer or mechanic, they can tell you.
You need to change it exactly when the owners manual say to. I bet your friend wishes he had.

Not to sound rude or anything, but if you need to ask it's best left up to the pros. I was an auto mechanic for 6 years and I can tell you that if a belt isn't done exactly as it should be you can cause serious motor damage. If you are one tooth off or have improper tension the valves can crash into the pistons. If you really want to know how, have a mechanic friend help you out and show you what to do and why.
If its the a6 get it to a shop. The front end comes off to replace the belts. I have done the job 4-5 times at my shop and it is not an easy one. Theres a reason we get so much to do that job, its not a 1.6 Honda that takes 1.5 hours to do.

The timing belt should be changed every 80,000 miles. Most people don't know when it was changed last. You could try to talk to the previous owner and see. The engine light normally comes on when you have a emission problem. You can still drive the car. You can scan you car to see what the light means. it's the timing belt that drives the camshaft, it should be changed every 50,000 miles or so, because if it breaks you will have valve damage and maybe piston damage.
look at your timing belt, its behind the cover and see if its cracked,if it is then you better change it.i think they were saying check your alternator and power steering and see if you got an a air pump if so check it also.
It should have been changed at 60000 miles. Go from this reference.
a timing belt needs to changed at certain intervals,e.g.60,000 , 100,000 , 140,000. You need to change the timing belt at these intervels to prevent the belt from breaking , if the belt breaks catastrophic engine damage may occur, so it is wise to change it at the recommended intervals. The process of changing the timing belt can be costly and labor intensive so you need to decide weather or not it would be cost effective to invest further into this vehicle .

They have never been a timing belt on any year cavalier. All cavalier engines use timing gears and chain.
I have to agree with the last two guys. No belt on this one, only a chain and gears. Unless its making noise, or has an excessive amount of slack (which is almost unheard of on those engines) I wouldn't worry too much about it. Chains are pretty solid and very, very rarely break.

  • Timing belt change-how to find in 1990 bmw?

    Hello all,

I have a 1990 BMW 525 which i bought from a second hand car dealer and he told that he had changed the timing belt. This year I am going to do a service on my car..like changing the distributor rotor, sparkplug change, oil change etc.My dealer told that he had changed the timing belt, but how do i confirm that that he had changed.Any way to find out that....

thanks in advance,Timing belt change-how to find in 1990 bmw?
The only way to tell is to look out for telltale signs of recent activity in the timing belt area (cleaner bolts and screws compared to the others in the engine...etc). Another way is to visiually inspect the belt itself for cracks, but if you could get to that stage, you might as well just replace the belt anyway since there's already a lot of labor involved.

Haynes repair manuals recommend 40,000 miles while Bentley repair manuals recommend 60,000 miles.

Either way, you should never delay changing it out because you have an interference motor, which could cause bent valves, cams and rocker arms when the belt becomes loose or if it snaps.Timing belt change-how to find in 1990 bmw?
Any dealer will do a free inspection, if your dealer has already said he has swapped it out, you can take his word for it or not,

Keep in mind for your car BMW recommends the belt swapped out at 60,000-70,000 so if you have 85,999 miles on your car you can be assured that you have another 30,000 miles left to go.

As evidence, your belt would have broken already from being dry-rotted or your belt would have some serious cracks in it.
As with all belts, you can check them visually or you can take it to an Auto parts store that offers free inspections of your belts for a better opinion
While timing belts have a recommended life other things can lead to failure. Over heat, oil leaks, coolant leaks can shorten the life. To check the belt you need to look at it. Does it show wear? Cracks or discoloration? Did the dealer tell at what millage the belt was changed, and did they replace the cam and crank seals %26amp; water pump?
Cannot. Even tearing out the timing belt cover (which takes about 2 - 3 hours of labor) and belt is visible, there is no way to tell unless your belt is ready to snap. However, if the BMW dealer said the car was serviced, you can trust because all BMW dealer work is required to be logged into a database.

you need a good repair manual on it they only cost about 25 bucks and it will have illustrations and instructions of how to do this one,i agree with the above answer that's a lot to try and type out and if we miss one detail it will cause you to mess up,its not an easy job and if you don't get it back in time right you can damage the engine in it,that's why you need a repair manual on it,good luck.Changing Timing belt on a 2002 Dodge Neon?
Forget the websites invest in a good workshop manual and read first and then follow the instructions

The job is not too difficult but has dire consequenses if you get it wrong. You also need a decent set of tools including a torque wrench.

You need to get the timing exact or you can damage the pistons and valves should they come into contact. Even a bit out will drastically affect the performance.
There are plenty of tips out there if you search. Somewhat of a pita car to work on.
Too much information to type out...

As suggested by the first response, invest in a shop manual. It will give you the step-by-step instructions you will need as well as the torque specifications (very important) and the tools required for the job. Replacing the timing belt is a job that needs to be correct the first time you do it as the Neon 2.0L engine is an interference engine. Screw up the timing and the pistons will dry-hump the valves. That is a very expensive mistake to make.
www.neons.org. Hit the search and you can find it. Timing belts are easy on these, but you will have to remove the passenger side engine mount, the harmonic balancer, alt, and p/s belts. You would need a good 3 jaw puller to remove the balancer, plus a floor jack and jack stands. You will also need to remove the right front wheel to access the timing belt area. Or you can go to 2gn.org to do some research

How many miles before changing timing belt on a car?

I have heard this is one of the best mechanically things you can do for your car to allow the engine to last longer is that true? How many miles before changing timing belt on a car?
If you have an acura integra it is they recommend a timing belt and water pump every 60,000miles. Mine broke at 135000 though so they'll last a while, but i got lucky because i was going slow when it decided to happen and i did not bend any valves. Do not wait this long. How many miles before changing timing belt on a car?
my truck has 210k miles and doesn't need one yet. My brother believes that if you plan on keeping it for a while you need to just replace everything, little by little.
typically it is suggested around 100K. I would go by what is in your owner's manual
i think it is around 45 to 50,000 if it breaks you could bend or break your valves be careful good luck
it is normally best to change the timing belt at 70-75,000 miles. since the timing belt is made of rubber like your alternator and ac belt it will stretch and or snap if not replaced at the suggested time.
Normally the timing belt is change every 60K.. but now the car can go to 100K for the timing belt change.. and also depend how you drive the car.

Best is check with the dealer or the book.
Most manufacturers recomend 50,000 to 60,000 miles

    http://www.autocarparts.ca
Depending on the manufacturer, it varies from 60,000 to 110,000 miles. Buy a car with a timing chain and you won't have that problem.
what type of car? does your car have a owners manual? is so look it up there or call a local dealer about your question instead of posting it here...
I assume you have a Acura? Acura/Honda engines are interfrence type engines, so maintaining you belt is of the upmost of importance, other wise you will have a very expensive engine repair. 60,000 miles is good rule of thumb for Honda/Acura models

For the record, Honda engines are almost all interference engines, as are (mainly) those from BMW, Hyundai, Isuzu, Kia, Nissan, Porsche, Volkswagen and Volvo. Most, but certainly not all, timing-belt-equipped engines from Ford, Lexus, Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota are non-interference engine.
Every 75,000 mile you need to change the timing belt and the water pump. Don't go over this by very much, if you do, you risk it breaking and bending all the valves. Good luck!

How much does it cost to change the timing belt on an Acura CL?

Plan on anywhere from $600 to $1,000. When I had it done on my Integra in Minnesota, it was a little over $500. When I had it done to my Protege after we moved to Illinois, Mazda charged me over $900. I don't think it had as much to do with the make of the car as the fact that it's the Chicago area, and the cost of living is higher here.

When you take it in, they will probably suggest you replace the water pump, even if it doesn't need it. DO IT!!! They are right next to each other, and most of the cost is in the labor. If you don't, and the water pump goes out later, you'll probably spend the same amount again in labor to go back in, where if you do it at the same time, it may add another hour to the labor, plus the cost of the part. How much does it cost to change the timing belt on an Acura CL?
call your local dealer and ask...not all dealers charge the same..
