According to Honda's Factory Labor Guide, how long should it take to change a timing belt and water pump?

Assuming the car has A/C and the front crank seal and front cam seal are replaced as well.According to Honda's Factory Labor Guide, how long should it take to change a timing belt and water pump?
this job will take a professional tech. 4.6 hours on a 6 cyl.According to Honda's Factory Labor Guide, how long should it take to change a timing belt and water pump?
a: Forever. The last quote I got for changing a Civic timing belt was over $450, which included the cost of a new belt and new water pump, since they're under the same cover. Subtract the cost of those items and divide the result by your local labor rates.

Depends on the model/year/engine type. There are different labor times for different model/year/engine type.
half a day maybe if one is able to stay working on it

Timing belt and water pump change?

I must change the timing belt of my car. I have been told that the water pump must be done too since it is right there. Due to the high price I want to postpone/skip the water pump until the next tune up. What happens if the water pump fails down the road? How long does a water pump last? 120K? My car has 60,000 miles on it. Thank you.Timing belt and water pump change?
I always suggest at same time. Most timing belt jobs are 4-5 hour jobs and all of that has to be removed to replace the water pumpp, which could be in a week a month or a year (roll the dice) it doesn't usually take much if any additional labor to replace the pump when everything else is out of the way usually just the cost of the pump itself. if you wait and say a month later the water pump goes out you would have the expense of the pump AND ALL THE LABOR AGAIN.Timing belt and water pump change?
The reason you are being told to change both at the same time is because the tear down is almost exactly the same to do both of those actions. It's highly recommended that you change both because you are probably gonna pay for 5 hours labour to change the timing belt then you are gonna pay for another 5 hours of labour when you take you car back to change the water pump, whereas had you simply changed the water pump at the same time it would have only added about 45 minutes of labour to the total labour...

Do both at the same time or don't bother doing any till you can afford both!
You don't have to renew the water pump. They mention it because it becomes easily accessible during the timing belt replacement. The extra cost should only be the cost of the water pump. So it's often sensible to include the water pump at the same time. If you do it at the next service it will cost you at least the same as you are paying now for the belt job.
There is no guarantee on how long the water pump will last, but normally 100,000 miles plus. But that is true of a timing belt too. The water pump has a weep hole at the bottom, visually check for corrosion or rust in that area. If you see some, could be a sign that it is ready to go soon. If not, then do the repairs that you can afford. But why the heck are you changing a timing belt at 60,000 miles.
not a good idea

At how many miles should i change my timing belt on my Yaris?

i have a 2000 toyota yaris 1.3sr its done 70,000 miles and is fine no problems but my friend has a 2003 clio that has 60000 miles on it and his belt went and cost him over 3k to fix the damage. when should i change mine i have heard everything from 90000 to 250000 any idea?

thank youAt how many miles should i change my timing belt on my Yaris?
These intervals range from every 60,000 miles to every 105,000 miles, you need to replace your timing belt. If not replaced in time, it may break possibly causing serious engine damage. When a timing belt breaks, the camshaft stops turning leaving some of the valves in the open position. The crankshaft, because it's heavier, continues to rotate by inertia. In an interference engine, this will cause the pistons to strike the valves that left open. This may result in broken or bent valves, damaged pistons, and possibly, destroyed cylinder head.

The damage will be less extensive in a non-interference engine but in either case, the engine will stall, leaving you stranded.

At how many miles should i change my timing belt on my Yaris?
you never know... company recommends a date or mileage that it should be done.. dont mean it will make it til that or cant say how long it will after it.... its only a recommendation and most of the time when a timimng belt or chain breaks it can cause damage to other parts costing more than the belt....really its only up to the driver to decide.. you call a few places and get a price and decide if your ready or wait it out
70,000 miles
100,000 is usually when you should do it - along with the water pump.

A timing belt can go anywhere from 90-250K without breaking (depending greatly on how the car is driven and maintained).

Most modern cars have 'interference' engines (valves and pistons are timed to miss each other), so if the timing belt breaks, or if it jumps time because it has stretched - then it can result in serious damage to the valves, pistons, or both.

Get a quote from the Toyota dealer, it might be expensive - but it's much cheaper than having it fail and destroy the engine.

If it is getting up in miles, and you can't afford to take it to Toyota, then ask around if anyone can suggest a good mechanic, try to get a few quotes.
manufacturer recommends 90,000 miles

If you have never done one, it will take you into eternity. You REALLY need to know what you are doing on these. The left side intake and exhaust cams are on lobe when you line up the timing marks. If you don't have the proper tools, you will keep jumping off of lobe. Also, the lower timing mark is impossible to see without a reachy-mirror. This is a job where you need to replace the cam and crank seals as long as you are there. If you don't, you will go back in and do them again at some point.

Now, if you decide to fix these things, you might as well save up and have the head gaskets replaced if they have not already been done. The timing belt, water pump, seals, etc. are changed when you replace the head gaskets. This is as common as Christmas on a Sunday with these cars. If your car is currently overheating, this is the problem.
3 hours top. i just did mine on my impreza , remove the radiator, and you have plenty of room to work, water pump about 6 bolts and 2 clamps and it comes right off, your new timing belt will have 5 marks on that you line up on each pulley, you cant mess it up, do a google search and you can find a belt diagram but your new belt will probably have one. good luck

Mechanic question: how to change a timing belt and tensioner on a 97 subaru 2.5 VJ engine?

I'd really appreciate it if someone who knows these engines well could explain step by step how to change the timing belt and tensioner on this engine.

Is there anything that can be done wrong that would cause the tensioner bolt to break?

This is so I can know if the job was done correctly in my car where the tensioner bolt broke 2 1/2 months after a new timing belt and tensioner was installed.

Thanks so much.Mechanic question: how to change a timing belt and tensioner on a 97 subaru 2.5 VJ engine?
If the shop offers any kind of warranty at all - and they should - then the fact that a part they replaced 10 weeks ago broke would be something I would expect to be covered.

The bolt could have been over torqued, or they could have re-used the old bolt instead of the new one supplied with the tensioner - stupid, but it can happen.Mechanic question: how to change a timing belt and tensioner on a 97 subaru 2.5 VJ engine?

How often are you suppose to change the timing belt on a 2002 Honda Accord?

They recommend it be changed at 95,000 miles. How often are you suppose to change the timing belt on a 2002 Honda Accord?
timing belts should be changed about every 30,000 miles or so. It can go longer, just feel the belt and make sure the RIBBED part of the belt is not cracking. If it is starting to crack then it needs to be replaced.

the timing belt is usually changed with the water pump since you need to take the water pump off to change the timing belt anyways. How often are you suppose to change the timing belt on a 2002 Honda Accord?
They recommend it be changed at 90,000 miles. Every time you turn that many miles, replace it. While you are in there, change the water pump too while you have access.

Added: Hey hiteck, where did you get the 30,000 miles figure? According to the manual, the interval for United States 1990-93 Accords is 90k miles/6 years, whichever comes first. I'm sure the later models are the same (yes, I need to upgrade my manual).
it depends if it's a 4 cyl or V6.On a 4 cyl you should change youre timing belt every 100,000 kms, along with the water pump. The reason is the water pump is driven by the timing belt. Therefore ';IF'; the pump fails so will youre belt, even if it has been replaced

For the 6 cyl check out owners manuel at the 100,000kms servicing shedual

Definitely no more than 150 to 200 dollars. I know for sure its 300 for a timing chain which involves a lot more work. Make sure you do some research and talk to some car guys before you take it somewhere on where a good place is. Best bet is to find a guy who does side work. How does it cost ( the labor) to change the timing belt on a 1996 Toyota Avalon?
it takes them about 30 minutes to change a belt. the money you pay for labor is the money you're paying not only to the mechanic, but to the salesperson, to the manager, the payroll clerk, electricity, utilities, and any other overhead costs they might have incurred in taking your order. also, the 30 minutes that it takes the mechanic to change your belt, he could be doing other things. like fixing someone else's car. so you're paying for the mechanic to fix your car as opposed to anyone else's.

and the year of the car doesnt matter. the time it takes for the mechanic is going to be about the same. whether it's a 1996 avalon or 2006.

I'm trying to remove the crank pulley bolt so I can change my timing belt.?

I have a 1997 VW Jetta 2 liter and want to change the timing belt. I can not remove the crank pulley bolt even with a 1/2'; impact. Am I turning it the wrong way? Is it clockwise or counter clockwise? The bolt head is a 19 mm 12 point. Any tips on how to remove it would be appreciated. I'm posting this for my hubby.I'm trying to remove the crank pulley bolt so I can change my timing belt.?
Anti clockwise to undo. Jam a power bar and socket on to the chassis and operate the starter.

These are notoriously tight and hard to undoI'm trying to remove the crank pulley bolt so I can change my timing belt.?
If you have a manual transmission, put it in gear, set the parking brake, and use a breaker bar to turn it counter-clockwise as you look at the head of the bolt. If it's an automatic, remove the starter and use a prybar or something similar to lock against the teeth on the flywheel so the crank won't spin... again, turn it counter-clockwise.

Also, spray it with penetrating oil first and let it sit for a while. If you happen to have rust on the threads or the bolt and it snaps in the crank, it's a real pain to fix.
the threading of the bolt usually depends on the rotation of the motor. I believe if the motor turns clockwise, the bolt loosens counterclockwise, and Viceversa...

i'm not saying to do this...but i used to break them loose on older cars by finding the rotation of the motor, wedging a breaker bar under the control arm accordingly and cranking the motor without the coil plugged in. (with everyone away from that side of the car too!!!)
If the pulley spins clockwise normally it probably will have counter clockwise threads, this prevents it from spinning out while running. It would be advised to find a shop manual and confirm this.

How do I know when to change the timing belt on my Honda Civic?

Its a good idea to have them changed about every 60,000 miles. If you bought the car used and don't know when it was last changed, check to see if there's a plastic removable inspection plate at the top and you can view the belt. Garages charge anywhere from 125 to 350 dollars to replace the belt which most of them will replace your waterpump, too, since it has to come off anyway to get to the belt. If you can afford to do so and again not sure how old the belt is go ahead and get it replaced. How do I know when to change the timing belt on my Honda Civic?

get a good light, look at the belt and if you see small cracks on the inside of the belt, you should get ready to change it ! if big cracks change it now , read your owners manual, this if the biggest source of knowledge you can have, mileage is the key to knowing when to have only the basic maintenance done. this book give you all the things to look at and inspect !

How hard is it to change the timing belt in a 1997 Toyota camry?

It is very hard if you have never done it before. It is surely a skilled job, taking a wheel off, taking off the plastic cover under the wing, having a manual with you, losing the alternator bolts, disconnecting water pump, taking off two pulleys and making mark, marking and losing tensioner, steering belt and what now. So many things, if held up even at one step you will be without a car and any mechanic will come to your place at 4 times the cost. Best is give a mechanic æ‹¢60/70 and collect the car in one hour fully professionally done. How hard is it to change the timing belt in a 1997 Toyota camry?

It's even harder than already described if the timing belt goes around the frame member, which it does on many of the Toyota models. In that case you have to loosen a motor mount and jack the engine up high enough to get the belt around the frame member.

I usually do most things on my car, but this is one that $120 (or 60quid in the UK?) is well worth the investment.

Ring your local friendly Mazda dealer and ask how often it should be changed. If you don't know the service history of the car it's best to be on the safe side and get it changed. If it breaks the cost of repairs will be more than the car's worth.
    You're living on borrowed time.
90 K , after that you are driving on God's humor. Change it yourself if you can, or ask a friend, it should be less than $500.
Ironic you posted this... My father has a 1995 Mazda Protege 1.8L, he has gone over 200,000 KM with the original timing belt. I got him to change it finally! It is said that a timing belt should normally be done every 100,000 KM. He paid $250 Canadian for the job and did his water pump too (extra)...

    great car you have!
As a rule timing belts should be done any where from 70,000 miles to 100,000. You would just be asking for trouble going much longer than that. I'm not sure about the Protege, but there are 2 different types of engines, an interference and a non-interference. The difference being, in an interference engine if the timing belt lets go, then the pistons WILL smack into the valves. In a non-interference this will NOT happen. My suggestion, don't find out the hard way, get it changed! Now as far as the price on a job like this, what you are paying for is the labor, the belt it self is only going to run you about $50.00. There is a lot involved in changing a timing belt, especially in a front wheel drive car. Shop around for a good price, or find someone you know who can do it. Hope this helps.

Start by getting all of the external stuff out of the way - the hood is tiny so remove it (trust me - it is a lot easier to work on a car with the hood off). Jack it up and put it on stands too.

Remove any accessory junk, coolant overflow, hoses, etc., be very careful with any wiring and connections - then start taking stuff off the engine - alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner compressor (you don't necessarily have to remove them, sometimes you can use zip-ties to hold them up out of the way).

Once you can access the front of the engine, remove the timing belt cover (sometimes easier said than done). I break most of them, because they aren't designed to come off while the engine is in the car (without jacking the engine up and removing a motor mount).

Be ABSOLUTELY SURE to check for timing marks on the crank and cam - if both gears do not have them, then you will need to mark the gears and the block/head so you can put it back into time when you put the new belt on. Failure to do so can cause a lot of wasted time, and could possibly damage the engine.

Turn the engine over (pulling the spark plugs makes this easier to do - and you probably need to inspect those anyway), until it is at 'TDC', meaning that both the crank and the cam timing marks are pointing straight up (the engine might be at a bit of a tilt).

Triple check your timing marks - and then release the tensioner (most people suggest replacing the tensioner along with the timing belt and water pump, but I never have). Remove the old belt, and then remove the water pump.

Install the new water pump - put the new timing belt on, line up your timing marks, and let the tensioner back down.

Cuss when it goes out of time when it tightens up and turns one or both gears. Release it again, and play with the way they are lined up so that when it tightens up that both crank and cam timing marks are EXACTLY lined up. If you put the whole thing back together and it isn't in time, you will be very mad.

Reassemble, and if you did everything right, fire it up!How much trouble is it to change the water pump on a 1996 geo metro 1.3 also the timing belt?
Before you attempt those repairs, I suggest you go and get yourself a repair manual for your car. Some engines are harder and more complicated than others. The manual will give you step-by-step instructions on how to do those and many other repairs. Read the instructions and then decide if it's something you can do or would be better in the hands of a pro.
    Water pump is very hard.
Leave it to the experts, you only need the timing slightly out, and you will wreck the whole valve train, or even the pistons, better to spend $600 than $2500.

How do i change a timing belt on a citroen xantia hdi year 1999?

any help and suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated to steer me into the right direction!

thank youHow do i change a timing belt on a citroen xantia hdi year 1999?
No special tools are required to do this job, there are some available but they are not really needed. some special knowledge will help. A timing belt replacement is not a difficult or hard job its just a little aukward and it has to be done right.

Access is the main point as its tight to work in. Use tipex or a paint pen to mark the cam and crank pulley, you dont need to worry about the injection pump on a hdi as its a common rail pump that does not need timing up.

You are better buying a cam belt kit so you get the tensioner's and guide pulleys too. Also being a hdi i can safely bet that the water pump is leaking slightly and may as well be replaced while your there.

If your unsure its not really worth the risk, the replacement cost of a cam belt can be as little as a 10th of the cost that it would be to reapir a broken belt or incorrectly fitted one.How do i change a timing belt on a citroen xantia hdi year 1999?
Go onto youtube. They have video uploads to show you how to change it.
you take the old one off then put the new one on.
no experience ? dont do it . potentially you can cause a lot of damage .
dont attempt if you fit incorrectly you will do a lot of damage to your engine go to garage or phone mobile mechanic to fit make sure u get a warranty
This is a big job on the Xantia HDI. It takes about 4.5 hours and you need 9 special tools to complete the job. My advice is if you are not a confident mechanic and can't get hold of the special tools needed. Forget it, and get a professional to do it. If you get it wrong you could do a lot of damage to the engine. It would cost more than the car is worth to repair.

How costly and difficult is it to change the timing belt on a 1990 escort xr3i (cvh)?

your so far answers are from people who have never seen a modern engine,,,,modern engines are usually packed under the the bonnet so tight that the timing belt is usually impossible to change without removing the radiator first,.

to change it you need to remove the cover and spark plugs so you can turn the engine by hand,it needs setting at (usually 3deg)before top dead centre of the no 1 cylinder, each timing belt is marked with a line,if you see where the line is on the old belt and put the new one in the same place you are ok,,,if you dont then the valves drop as the pistons rise and you have a greatly F***ed engine,,,mechanics set the belt with computers and previously ';strobe';lights so they dont get it wrong, its time consuming and costly and timing belts should be changed about every 80,ooo miles,or by a saab in future they dont have a timing belt, they use a double';bicycle';chain which lasts the life of the carHow costly and difficult is it to change the timing belt on a 1990 escort xr3i (cvh)?
If its a simple belt then a few bucks, you can put it in yourself. If its one of those kind that snakes around everything then tack on a couple of more bucks and consider 1 hour of labor at a reputable shop. How costly and difficult is it to change the timing belt on a 1990 escort xr3i (cvh)?
its a petrol engine and fairly easy to do, BUT i advise you change the water pump at the same time... the Mk 4 was prone to blowing up after the timing belt change... (Its a crap pump)
Are you refering to the Cam belt (timing belt) or the accesory belt?

Cam belt is the big one under the cover along side the engine top to bottom (ish).

The accesory belt snakes around pulleys and tensioners, Goes to the alternator, water pump etc...

The accesory belt should be simple, relatively cheap belt, and hour to do if you dont minde getting your hands dirty, haines manual will walk you through it.

If its the Cam (timing) belt you mean its not that simple, unless your a very compatent mechanic you rish screwing the engine up for good if you get it a little bit wrong, even one or two teeth out of place can be a killer.. dead.. forever.

    So all in all...

Accesory (known as fan) belt - worth a go if you dont mind getting dirty and a few quid for the belt from halfords and a haines manual and a socket set.

Cam Belt - competant mechanic who knows what hes doing - costs the money, but if its done wrong the cars a gonna, and to be honest a 1990 plate xr3i isnt worth jack with a knackered engine after the cams been killed.
Piece of pi*s 20 quid for a belt engine at TDC and about 45 minutes and your done
It will take about 2 hours labour time in a garage (with the correct equipment) If you attempt to do it at home, without the correct equipment then it will take a lot longer.

May I recomment that you fit a cambelt kit rather than just a belt, as with a kit you get the pulley and bearing (which also wear).

if you cannot figure how to take the cover off [no disrespect]but do not try to do the job it requires experience and know how and one false Move will wreck the engine.
JR makes a fine point there. You also need the locking tools so you can be sure the engine does not move when you remove and refit the belt.
Not to mention it will need a new belt tensioner fitted at the same time.

How often is it necessary to change the timing belt on a car?

I've got a 2005 dodge neon SXT. It has 52K milesHow often is it necessary to change the timing belt on a car?
Don't guess. Look it up in your car's maintenance manual. Also check the online Gates belt replacement guide below to see if you have an ';interference'; type engine that suffers major damage if the belt breaks. If you don't have an interference engine, you can just keep driving until the belt breaks and then get it fixed. It may never break.

http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?brochuHow often is it necessary to change the timing belt on a car?
50K is the norm for most cars, however some cars such as the Audi specify 30K. If you don't change the belt, you can trash your engine beyond repair.
Most manules will tell you 60,000 but in lots of cases you can push it to 75 or 80,000
60k is the limit you want to push, anytime after that you are living on borrowed time. Some engines will suffer great damage to the valves and pistons if left to chance.
    i know nothing about cars
You can call the dealer and ask for the Service Dept. and ask them the appropriate mileage for your model. For my '87 Honda it was 60,000 mi., but later models specify 90,000. It finally broke at 110,000 mi., costing $1500 back in 1992.

    At many auto parts stores you can buy a Haynes or Chilton's do-it-yourself manual for your model car, with step-by-step instructions, service intervals for belts, filters, etc. and basic explanations at the beginning of each chapter. If it is not in stock, you can order it online by searching on ';auto repair manuals'; on Yahoo search. In the front is a section on ';Troubleshooting'; that guides you step-by-step to find causes of most engine malfunctions based on the car's symptoms. Whether you do the work yourself or not, it helps you make informed decisions and not be taken advantage of, and to not feel so ';in the dark.';

db667089 says: you can check http://www.alldatadiy.com. For about the same price as a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual, you can have online access (for a whole year) to model specific info for your particular vehicle. This is the same info that repair shops use. They have great wiring schematics/diagrams.

Also, for about $15 for a one-month subscription, you can get the factory repair manual, downloadable (careful! Mine was about 500 pages!) or viewable, at http://eAutoRepair.com.

Also, many people recommend autozone.com's free online manuals.

How much money does it cost to change a timing belt for a mercades benz?

First of all, always mention what year and model you have.

Secondly, and more importantly, no Benz vehicle, gasoline nor diesel, uses a timing belt. All Mercedes engines use a timing chain. How much money does it cost to change a timing belt for a mercades benz?
    The dealer or somewhere else?

The dealer will be in the $800.00 dollar range, a reputable mechanic @ 500.

How often should I change my timing belt? 92 Accord?

I have a 1992 Honda Accord with 210,000 miles on it. (I know, that's ALOT.) I haven't changed the timing belt since I bought it at 165,000 miles. What else should I get done along with the timing belt and what's a reasonable price range to pay a mechanic to get all this done? How often should I change my timing belt? 92 Accord?
a cars timing belt should be changed every 90,000 to 100,000 miles. if you have not done yet you should get the tranny fluid and filter changed, wires, plugs, cap and rotor, oil, and check the accsessory belts for wear.

basicly you should get a good tune up done. this is all pretty easy to do your self but if you cannot. this would probably be a 300.00 dollar job around me(upstate NY area) get a haynes book from your local parts store and it will help you do it your self. but if you dont know alot about cars leave the timing belt to the pros. How often should I change my timing belt? 92 Accord?
let say $300.00.including the water pump.(once the mechanic has the system open, change the water pump too)
    Every 60 - 80,000 miles about $300
I'm pretty sure you have a 2.2 litre engine and it should be changed every 100 000 km (not sure in miles). When you do change the belt you should also change the water pump along with the crank, cam, and oil pump seal since they are prone to leak and your half way there already. Theres no sense in doing the job twice. I dont know the maintenance history of your vehicles but with that many miles though might want to think of doing a tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter etc.). Price for the timing belt %26amp; water pump should run you about $600.00 and tune up could run you about $350.00.

Agree with post #1. Why waste all your money on buying an exotic car and try to fix it yourself if you don't know how. Changing a timing belt requires tools, time, patience and skills to do it right the first time.

Please don't destroy the car and leave it to the professional.
best way is 1,000.00 and pick up when done as if it gives problems you have no Toyota engraved palte for changing belt and warranty would be non-existent on new belt.

How do you change the timing belt on Ford Couture 1998?

when my car takes off it is slow once it gets going however it is fine unless you make lots of turns and stops then tends to die on me. I had a check engine light and said viable cam timing overreatered thiHow do you change the timing belt on Ford Couture 1998?
More than likely you have a problem with the variable cam timing system, not advancing cam timing when you accelerate. The Zetec DOES have variable timing, that is why there is a big VCT logo stamped on the valve cover, the posts below are untrue. I would suggest having it looked at by a professional. This engine requires special timing procedures, there are no cam sprocket keyways or marks, a special tool is inserted in the end of the cams and another tool is screwed into the side of the block to time crankshaft to correct position. How do you change the timing belt on Ford Couture 1998?
Most likely its a hard rubber belt, and from what you said, I think it broke, which is probably why you can't find it. It goes around the wheels, usually in the front of the engine, it has to turn the crank, which is connected to your main engine, and the alternater, which supplies the electrical power to the plugs, among other things, and you might have an Air Conditioner, so there might be two wheels, maybe even three. If it is indeed a timing belt, then that might be made of metal, but I've seen them made of rubber. If you have all the meters you can fix it, but if you don't, just have a mechanic come take a look at it.
Since I don't believe the Mazda/Zetec 4 cyl has variable cam timing it sounds like you have the SVT with the 2.5 V-6. That thing is quite an experience to service. As long as it is still running the timing belt is NOT broken, however it may be on it's way out, and you do NOT want that to let go altogether. If the belt has slipped a tooth or two it will make a dog out of it. And it may fool the ECM into thinking it's it's a problem with the variable as it detects an out of expected range condition. I would consult a dealer, or at least buy a manual that covers this model specifically. And there is special tools needed to set the timing properly.
There is Variable Cam timing on all 2.0 DOHC's made after 1997 (if the car was a 1998 model)

If you have a MIL with that code, I'd recommend what yugie says 100% and bring it to a shop (preferably ones like a dealer or who ain't afraid of those motors as some independants are.. at least in my area) Also there are special tools as he said and even those familiar with the engine have problems at times (as it requires removing a motor mount and supporting the engine with a holding fixture)

You could have belt problems, but I've seen more problems causing codes from lack of oil changes casuing blockages and finally seezing of the VCT..

get it researched and get it done right...
Well, it's not variable cam timing exactly...it's a hydraulic damper on the 2nd cam. It's a real pain. You should take it to the ford dealership and let them fix it as they have all of the special tools required. good luck.

The Federation went to a timing chain on the Enterprise and later hulls.
About a 7 on a scale of 2 to 9 with 6 being the highest, of course.
According to the Haynes manual for Enterprise models NCC1701a-f, in the earlier models it's a simple job, but on the later versions the Dilithium injector pump has to be removed first, which takes a whole day.

    pedro is right again.
It depends if it is the front or rear crank seal. Minimum of 5 hours if you know what you are doing. Mechanics do not charge by the hour, they charge by the book rate hour....how long the book says it takes to change the parts. That is how good mechanics make 80 plus hours by working 40.
about 5-6 hours to do it right, some mechanics might can do it in less time but on average it takes at least that long to get it all back together and make sure everything is the way it should be and that's if no bolts break off which does happen sometimes,if that happens it takes a lot longer to do one, good luck.

take it to a garage, trying to change it yourself could possible cause considerable damadge to the engine if you get it slightly wrong, what makes this more complicated is that its a diesel, the diesel pump needs to be locked in place, if its not the injector timing will be lost

The 1998-2009 US Toyota Corolla has a timing chain, while a 1990-1997 US Toyota Corolla has a timing belt.

There is no prescribed service interval for the timing chain. If you had a timing belt, for that model year you would change it every 60,000 miles or 4 years.

simple check your model code on the compliance plate under the bonnet if the model number starts with ae/11 series you will have either a 4afe 1600 cc motor of 7afe /1800 cc both use timing belt if you model code starts with zze/12series you will find the motor fitted will bw either a 1azfe 1600 cc 1.6 litre or 2azge 1800 cc or 1.8litre. this series of engines are fitted with timing chain
If your car has never had the belt replaced you are probably on thin ice. There will be no other damage if the belt does break though. If you have the belts done you will probably be told that you need some oil seals or maybe a water pump etc. Be prepared for the extra expense. I would not spend money trying to make an 11 year old car faster. You will not accomplish much and performance parts are expensive.
I think it has a timing chain, so don't sweat it. See source below.
You have a maintenance-free timing belt so you don't have to do anything to it.

How hard is it to change a timing belt?

Everyone says its impossible or expensive. What can go wrong? How hard is it to change a timing belt?
PUTTING IN SIMPLE TERMS, IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE THIS ';THEN DON'T DO IT';.

MISALIGNED TIMING BELT = BENT VALVES AND OR MOTOR REPLACEMENT.

EVERYONE IS WRONG IN WHAT THEY ARE TELLING YOU.How hard is it to change a timing belt?
I would definitely get a second opinion on that. I have heard that it is not that bad myself. I wish I could help you with details. You should post the make and model ...that might help.
if you dont do it right you can bend the valves
It's not easy, and if you don't get it exactly right the pistons tend to become one with the valves.
If you're gonna do it yourself, yes, things can go wrong if you're not familiar with how it all works. A timing belt is like a timing chain on an older car. Yours is probably over head cam(s). Some of the belts, OHC, are 'external' with only a 'cover' for safety's sake. Some are inside the engine housing, like a Mazda Miata. The external ones are easy, basically, but you gotta know about the 'timing' itself on either external or internal. If I were you %26amp; didn't have a garage w/helper, I'd take it to a good mechanic.
most of the time nothing will go wrong if when you take it off . but always mark the gears so when you put on the new one the gears will be in line. because if there not then the time will be off. and biggest part of the time if that happens you have to take it back apart and reset the gears again.
Its really not hard to change it but getting it timed afterwards is the problem... In the long run its better to take it to an everyday mechanic.. (Not your dealer) Good luck Grant M in Pennsylvania

Its a 97 Toyota Corolla -126,000 miles. The timing belt was not changed...but the mechanic asked 500$ for the same. forget the mileage..the belt is THIRTEEN years old dude. Just do it, it will be way easier to SELL the car if you can say the t belt and water pump was doneHow long can my car run without changing timing belt?
A car will run until the timing belt gives out. After that there is nothing to sync the camshaft with the crankshaft and the vehicle will be dead until the belt is replaced.
After 60000 it can brake in any moment, whether 2 days or 2 years.
Still not a good idea. Think about the headache it will cause if the timing belt blows on the highway or even around town, you'll have to pay for a tow, plus the repair. Just get it fixed now, save yourself the stress.
    Hi

the 1.3 and 1.6 petrol engines, and the 2.0 diesel engines, are all interference engines, so I would suggest that you have the timing belt changed as soon as possible if any of these engines are fitted to your car.

The 1.3 and 1.6 petrol engines should take no longer than 2 hours to replace the timing belt, and the 2.0 diesel engine no longer than 3 hours.

Just for the record, its city driving that places the most strain on the belt. Long journeys at a constant respectable speed place less strain.

However, depending on your mileage, you should get a timing belt component kit, just so you dont have to worry about old residue and crap on the pulleys, and they do wear out, and if one of them breaks, you just detroyed your motor.

  • How hard is it to change the timing belt on a 93 Saturn?

I have pretty basic automotive skills and a few tools. Is there anything special that i should know? Do i need any special tools that the average backyard mechanic might not have? How hard is it to change the timing belt on a 93 Saturn?
first purchase a shop manual for this car as there several procedures that Saturn uses that are different from most everyone else. sl/sc engines do not have timing belts they are chain driven[granted it is not much more than a bicycle chain] but if it breaks the cyl. head will have to come off for valve replacement and guide repairs both twin cam and single cam engines are interference fit [valves collide with pistons] if the timing cover is to be removed it is sealed with R.T.V.sealant and surfaces must be chemically clean upon reassembly to prevent oil leakage. there is a tool available to align the geroter type oil pump and should be obtained as this part of the job with engine in the car can be tricky. #[SA9104E] if chain is to be replaced you must also install new tensioner and guide rails as they will be worn out or broken up. NOTE rebuilt sl engines [single cam] are rather inexpensive from Saturn if your body and interior are still in good shape you may be money ahead to replace the engine especially if you know that valves are bent. this is an awkward engine to remove[sub-frame comes out with engine and trans] and should only be done on a lift. hope i helped and use caution jacking and blocking,[ you can only be dead once.] and good luck

dealer recommendations are 50,000 for both belts serpentine you can get away with timing belt you always want to do before it breaks (around fifty thousand miles or so ) because if it brakes you are looking at bent valves and head problems which would be alot more expensive than changing the belt as a preventative maintenance itemHow often do i need to change the timing belt and serpentine belt on a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica?
The serpentine belt runs power steering air conditioner compressor water pump and probably some thing els I'm forgeting. It should be inspected every time you change the oil. If it looks cracked it should be replaced. With 43000 miles I would replace the belt. The timing belt is another story. It should last a very long time. At least 100,000 miles. If you are not a mechanic I don't recomend doing this your self. But most manufactuers do not recomend a timing belt change untill after 100,000 miles.

How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?

I don't know how many miles or the exact year. I think it's early to mid 1990's. It's my boyfriend's car and he's thinking of changing it on its own. I just want to know how long that might take. How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?
I own a shop, and build many engines. A good experienced mechanic will take about six - eight hours. Some engines have belts, while others have chains, it just depends on which engine you are talking about. I know I may get some flack about how long it takes, and what the book calls for, but If a person does one, then one must consider the tool thing. How is he going to remove the damper from the crankshaft? Sometimes they will break, even using the correct gear puller on them. Some have a tensioner that must be replaced in them, so this job can turn into a nightmare for a backyard mechanic sometimes. Tell your BF to go purchase a ';Haynes Repair Manual'; from the parts store ';before'; he tries to tackle the job, or he may end up with a blown engine on his hands.

    Part 2:

Many people on here over look the fact; the answers thing is world wide, and they are assuming you are in the USA. Like I said it depends on the engine as to the chain, or belt thing. The chains use a different type of tensioner. It has what is known as a wear strip on the tensioner, and if this is worn it will have to be replaced. It's not worth getting in a fight with your BF over ';its a belt, or its a chain';! If it's his car, then let him work on it, and don't worry about ';how long'; it will take to do the job because; once he gets started on it, he will see it's a job he doesn't need to do, and that will be the end of that. Sounds like he wants to be a mechanic, and what better way for him to get started? Giving your BF some space may do more for your relationship than he will for the car. I think once he see's what he is getting in to, he will forget about changing it. One can love a puppy, but hold it too hard, and squeeze it to death.

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?
as long as the mechanic feels it takes.
How experienced is your boy friend with mechanics? It is a six hour job if you know what you are doing. First thing to do before he starts tearing into the car is to find true top center on the number one cylinder. That is the compression stroke of the cylinder. Once that is established you will be able to remove the radiator and the water pump and hoses. Remove the valve cover where the number 1 cylinder is and watch the valve spring open and close on the number 1 cylinder. Make certain that it is the intake valve not the exhaust valve. Remove the timing cover and look at the posistion of the dot on the large gear. That is the gear on the top. Double check that it is on the compression stroke of the number 1 cylinder.

Line up the two dots on the new timing chain in the middle facing each other on the gears. Rotate the engine by hand until the dot on the large gear is at the very top in alignment with the lower gear. That is actual top dead center on the number 1 cylinder. Double check your work. Rotate the engine once again and watch the intake valve open then close. The dot on the large gear should be in alignment in the middle with the dots facing each other. After that rotate the engine until the dot is at the exact top in alignment with the lower dot. Replace the timing cover and accessories. Good luck little Lady.................
well first place its chain change only if broke or worn time well everything on front of motor has to come off 3.5 to 5.5 for someone experienced and the right tools
There is no timing belt on these cars, only a timing chain. Why change it?

This isn't really a job that I would tackle in my driveway. It would take 4 or 5 hours if you are familiar with changing timing chains. On this particular engine, the oil filter adapter housing/pressure regulator is bolted to the side of the front cover in front of the R/S inner tripod joint. You must remove the R/S axle to access it.

    Good Luck
as long as it takes like an afternoon
this car definitely has a timing chain but they can still stretch and the plastic rollers on them can crack and break. this is not a job for even a slightly experienced gear head. let a professional do it because if you mess it up, youre out a car. but if a shop messes it up, you get compensated.... let's be smart here
if you dont know what you are doing it could take a verry long time.. if you do know what your are doing. shouldnet take more than a couple of hours.... but you got to make sure you get the timing right.. and that is verry easy to screw up.. if the timing wheel gets turned at all.. and you put the belt back on it can be in the wrong positon and the car wont start .. the valves halve to be in the right position.. and a certin valve hals te be the one that is up .. and they go around twic there is two positions where that valve will be up if i remember correctly.. been a long time sine i worked on timing...

I don't think you're looking at the timing belt.

The belt you see from the outside is the serpentine belt, which powers all the accessories (water pump, alternator, power steering, air conditioner). Look somewhere in the engine bay for a routing diagram... one part will have an arrow showing how to rotate it out for the tensioner.

    It's usually just a 13 or 15mm socket you'd use.

The timing belt is inside the engine, which powers the camshafts. If that's really the belt you need to replace, you must have a shop do it -- you will not be able to re-time it yourself and you risk damaging the engine. How do i change a timing belt on a 2004 huyndai sonata?

Should be a chain depending on the motor is how hard its going to be. If it is a 3.0 ohv valve motor its not to bad. The duratech 24valve is more complicated. You would need a days worth of time to complete the job. both are chain

i most cases they take the whole engine out because there just no space to work in the engine bay so its hard to change it

    i think is a chain.
Don't touch it if it's a chain. Also...if you have limited knowledge and tools this spells timing doom.

Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?

I've never had a vehicle long enough to need a belt, so I don't know how reliable a timing belt is, but I have 89k on it and plan on doing a wp at the same time; should I safely be able to take it to 90k without a problem? I know that the recommended interval for this engine is 90k, but I believe it is an interference engine. Opinions? Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?
Change the belt! Particularly since it is an interference engine. Timing belts are relatively durable, but unlike timing chains, they were not designed to last the entire life of your car. Belts warp and tear over time.

I had a timing belt go out on my previous car (17 year old Toyota with over 165k on the odometer at the time). Luckily it was a free-wheeling (non-interference) engine and there was no valve damage. However, I was stranded on the side of the road, had to pay for towing, and wasn't able to make it to work that day because of it. If the belt is expected to last 90,000 miles, I would personally probably change it every 85,000 just to be safe. You wouldn't run a car on almost-bald tires, would you?

Also, change the water pump at the same time. Might as well since you will be in there anyway.

Better safe than sorry, I always say. I find Toyotas to be extremely reliable, but even the most reliable engines will fail if not properly maintained and cared for. 1,000 miles may not make much of a difference, but all it takes is a stroke of bad luck to screw up a perfectly good engine. No sense in procrastinating.

Best of luck. Take care of that truck and it will take care of you. There's no telling how long it will last you if you treat it right. Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?
Do what the dealer says--if it says 90--its 90---89 is a thousand off--one crummy month--do it and stop playing around.
Recommendation? The timing chain on my car is supposed to be changed every 150,000 miles... I'm at ~305,500 on the original chain. Of course I inspect it every year when I adjust the valves, but it's still in great shape. Check the belt to make sure it's not loose, cracking, or lost its rubbery feel. If it seems okay, go ahead and wait till 90k miles if that's what's recommended.
ive driven cars 50k past their recomended belt change....of course i dident care about those cars,my advice is change it
If it was me, I would just go ahead and change it at 89k. I would kick myself in the *** if I decided to hold off and the belt broke. Broken timing belt=sending the pistons up into the valves=very bad news and lots of money for repairs. This is just my humble opinion, do what you and your wallet allows you too.
Any time you have this kind of decision to make ask what is your risk vs reward

    Risk = broken timing belt

Reward = one month of time

Whether you get it at 89K or 90K miles, are you going to hold it for another 90K? If not then you'll only do one change so then then just get it now.

    ===

My Audi is recommended for 90K. But everybody is screaming about timing belts breaking as low as 70K. So I had it change at 60K miles. I figure I would have to do it sooner or later, and I don't plan on holding the car till 120K (another 60K). So either way I would only do 1 change so why risk riding it for so long?

    ===

Besides how dumb are you going to feel if the belt broke so close to your change period (especially after asking yourself this question)?

Keep the paper work. My brother's timing belt broke few hundred mile out because the ';pro'; made it too tight.

    Good Luck.
I'm not big up on cars now a days but i do own a 1974 Chevy Nova. When I bought it I dug straight in to the engine to find out anything that may have looked strange. I didn't notice any Thing until about the 5th time i drove it when i smelt something strange. I pulled over and popped the hood to find MY timing chain unwrapped and gnarled around the alternator. This was not a good thing. It was easily replaceable. Although it is almost 35 years old I new right when I got it to replace the belts for ever thing. What I think would be a helpful bit of information is how long you personally have had this vehicle. Oh and to answer your question. Yes you should change your timing belt. In my past I find that if I ask questions about something (especially cars) its more than likely that it is a yes :) besides it never hurts to replace something.
The recommended mileage has a safety factor build in so you are very safe going to 90K, I would not go too much over that.

How do I change the timing belt on my 1990 Honda Civic?

Any experts? I'm good with cars but, I have never changed a timing belt?

Can you explain in detail how to do it?

thanksHow do I change the timing belt on my 1990 Honda Civic?
    1) get some 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, sockets and wrenches. and a 1/16'; allen wrench, small bench vice.

    2) disconnect battery + and tape a rag on it.

2.1) remove power steering pump and set aside. this can usually be done without disconnecting lines.

    2.2) remove alternator.

    3) turn engine with socket on crank (17mm or 19mm) until timing marks are t.d.c.

    4) remove timing cover (10mm socket) needed for this should be 8 or 10 small bolts.

    5) dont forget the 2 at the oil pan connection below (12mm socket)remove crank pulleys (17mm socket)

    6) once covers are off locate tensioner and insert 1/16'; allen wrench in hole on side of tensioner this will save lots of grief later. and then remove. (12mm socket)

    7) on the valve sprockets there will be a dimple that you line up with a notch on top of cyl head usually at 12:00 position.

    8) remove timing belt.

    9) reverse order to re assemble.

    10) oh darn the allen wrench wont fit because belt is too streched or broken! (no worries, compress in small vise and put allen wrench in make sure that you put it in the correct side or you'll have a problem when you go to remove it after the new belt is on)

    11) just for future reference get yourself a Clymers auto manual. about $20 but worth it.

    12) also i'd replace your water pump while you have it apart because that is a pain to get to.

How to change Timing Belt and Water Pump in Audi 1998 A4 Quattro2.8?

If your asking this question on line, I WOULDN'T recommend you do it yourself unless you've got some good manual and/or a friend who has done a timing belt. I've never worked on an Audi, but if it's anything like my sister-in-law's VW (they are the same company) it requires quite a bit of time. If you are mechanically inclined.

Typical steps to replacing a timing belt.

    1. Disconnect battery.

    2. Remove all accessory belts. (various means).

    3. Remove the harmonic balance. (On the crank shaft that was driving all the accessory belts. Usually the hardest part for me of a timing belt change.

    4. Remove the timing belt covers. Typically an upper and lower cover.

    5. If necessary you may have to remove an engine mount if the engine is a transverse mounted engine. If this is the case you'll have to support that part of the engine with a floor jack and preferably a piece of wood or something that won't punch through your oil pan. Or you can use an engine hoist from the top.

    6. Now align the crank shaft and cam shaft(s) to Top Dead Center (TDC) for cylinder 1. Usually there's marks on both the cam and crank shaft to indicate when you are at TDC.

    7. Now look for a pulley that is applying pressure to the timing belt, but can be loosened and be pushed against to loosen the timing belt.

    8. Remove timing belt.

    9. Remove water pump.

    10. Install in reverse order.

    11. However you need to be sure you didn't mess up the synchronization between the cam shaft and crank shaft. So after re-applying the tensioner's pressure. You must try to turn the crank shaft two rotations and check cam shaft location. They should be the same as before. If not, your crank and cam shaft have gotten out of synchronization and you must take the timing belt off and re-sync them.

If everything is in sync, then re-install everything in the reverse order.

That's the short version of how to do a timing belt. I recommend getting a few manuals to look over the entire process.

Good luck. How to change Timing Belt and Water Pump in Audi 1998 A4 Quattro2.8?
it's not a DIY job for an amateur, but maybe you can find somebody on audiworld.com who has done it and would be willing to help you. It involves removing the bumper and dismantling the front part of the engine. While you're there, it makes sense to replace the water pump as well. Shops will charge you between $900 and $1400 to do the job.

Click on my source link for a step-by-step guide. In addition the forums on Audiworld can be very helpful. I paid $1100 for TB/WP replacement on my Audi (same body style and essentially the same stuff in the front of the engine)

  • How do I and what is the best way to change a timing belt in a 94 Ford Escort LX 1.9L.?

I was driving it when it broke. Not sure if I did any other damage internally to the motor but what is the best way to find out after I replace the belt? How do I and what is the best way to change a timing belt in a 94 Ford Escort LX 1.9L.?
You can breathe a sigh of relief because your particular car's engine is NOT an interference engine, meaning the valves will NOT touch the pistons if it goes out of time. Anybody who posts, telling you otherwise, is full of S***. Even more good news is that it is also VERY easy to replace on your particular car if you are somewhat skilled. Any place you take it to, should not charge you any more than 3 hours of labour to do the repair. Any more than that, they are ripping you off. The belt itself, is also very inexpensive, even from the Ford dealer. Are you going to attempt to replace it yourself? If so, the sizes for the fasteners are 17mm for the engine mount fasteners, mostly 10mm for the splash guards underneath, as well as the fasteners that secure the hoses up top in the engine compartment,13mm for the belt tensioner bolt, 19mm for the crank pulley, and I think two 11 or 10mm nuts that hold the timing cover. Hope this helps. How do I and what is the best way to change a timing belt in a 94 Ford Escort LX 1.9L.?
If it broke while driving, there will be residue under the crank sprocket. You will need to take the pass. side front tire off. Take the serpantine belt pulley off of the crank and then take the cover off to get all of the trash out of the sprocket. Then put it on TDC, then put your cam in time. Then you can put the belt on. Loosen the pulley on the water pump all of the way. When you put the belt on, tighten up the idler on the water pump, but not too tight. It will shorten the life of the belt if it's too tight. If it's too tight the motor will make a whirrr but it won't be damaging. You can get more performance if you advance your cam 1 tooth. Good luck.

Looking for information on renault clio w reg how to change timing belt. Do you need any special tools?

A timing belt change is only for pro's or competant DIY mechanics be careful as getting wrong can cause expensive damage

A little knowledge is dangerous, leave well alone !!Looking for information on renault clio w reg how to change timing belt. Do you need any special tools?
If You do it Yourself, be warned, it's labour intensive.
If the clio is 16v you will need a camshaft locking bar. there is a big D and a little D set up on the flywheel side of the camshaft remove rubber grommets to find them use the Big D to time the vehicle. another thing to watch out for is there is no key-way on the crankshaft sprocket so be careful when taken this of the crankshaft dose`t move. If it`s a 8v they are straight forward and take a couple of hours. be sure to support engine as you will have to remove O/S engine mountain. If your not sure take to a independent garage.
no but if you have not done one before be carefull

How do i know when to change the timing belt?

i have an Acura 3.2 TL, when i bought it, it has 90 000 km on it. Now it has 217 000 km. I never did the timing belt before. Do i have to do it? or did the previous owner already changed it already? How do i know when to change the timing belt?
On most overhead cam engines if the belt breaks it will do major damage to the engine because the valves will hit the pistons. Check the owners manuel for the recomended times to change. When in doubt change it anyway, it will be a lot cheaper than a new engine.

If you are mechanically inclined get a repair manuel and change it yourself. Check the timing belt idler for wear, if it goes out it will ruin the belt. On most engines there are other parts that you may want to replace at the same time because of the labor involved in getting to them. (other belts, water pumps, hoses., ect)How do i know when to change the timing belt?
Either done or not done... You are do..

Any time from 90,000 and on is Roulette..( changed or not changed)

    I'd do it....
some engines have a timng belt cover or covers that you can remove and visually inspect the belt. some covers are a pain to remove tho
i would say your over do. better change it now or you will be looking at some big bucks later.

It would be a good idea to change the belt any time you do work of this nature. Don't throw it away though, keep it in the trunk. My old man once saved several hours by having his old one in the trunk of his '78 Monte. Just replaced it on the spot and was on his way.

How much will it cost to change a timing belt on a 1999 Honda Accord?

I have been told that at 60K you should change it. Also is 146K on a 99 Accord too much? How much will it cost to change a timing belt on a 1999 Honda Accord?
$200.How much will it cost to change a timing belt on a 1999 Honda Accord?
Avg life of a timing belt is from 60,000-100,000 miles, depending on the car make and model.

Honda's are known to lean more towards the 85,000-90,000 mile mark before they tend to break.

146,000 miles on a Honda? Nah....she's just now breaking in. Routine maintance and a loving owner and she can last you into the 200,000 range without much effort. Seen some Honda's over 300,000.

For her age of 1999 and 146,000...yes...it is high miles for her age. Average person only drives 10,000-13,500 miles per year. Your car has averaged just under 21,000 miles per year.

Sounds like my work trucks hahahahaha.
The cost for a new timing belt is about $13. The labor to replace it could be a couple of hours since many parts need to be removed to get to it.

The Honda 2.3L is an interference engine which means if the timing belt breaks then the engine will be damaged. So do not put off replacing the belt.
This type of repair here in Washington State may cost as much as $450.00 or more, now, the honda engine has a timig belt and a balance belt.

The Recommended replacement interval for the timing belt on the vehicle you mention is shown on alldata to be 105k and change the waterpump at the same time!

The labor should be about 4.6 -5.0 hrs for both the 4 cylinder engine and the V-6 at between $65.-$85/hr and that is counting on replacing the waterpump which is highly recommended on a honda, as the waterpump is driven by the timing belt and not replacing it, if the waterpump should fail it will also destroy the timing belt.

I cannot quote parts prices as they vary so much from state to state but what I can say is DO NOT EVER USE AFTERMARKET PARTS IN A HONDA IN THIS REPAIR AREA ALL PARTS ARE NOT THE SAME hondas are very pickey and work much better with factory parts as factory parts are exactly right.
it is going to be between $200 and $400. I had to put a new water pump in my Kia, and I ended up messing up the timing, so I had to tow it to the dealer, and just to install the belt they charged me $245 I think, and then tried to sell me on about another $1500 in repairs I didn't need. I am a pretty good mechanic, so I didn't buy any of their bull crap. I would suggest, if possible, you try to do it yourself. You will need a book to set the engine timing, and you will have to set the ignition timing. But it took me about 3 hours to do it, and I never done it before. I had the timing almost on, but it just wouldn't start. And I undid the distributor thinknig I may have been able to start it by messing witht he timing, and those sorry people left it loose and it took me about 3 days to catch on. I hate going to people to work on my car!!!! I ran my Kia to about 102,000 and had to rebuild the motor, and the belt still looked decent.
On a crown VICTORIA is $400 just for the timing chain!! If that will help you... Shop around...

  • Do you have to remove the engine to change a timing belt on a 2000 toyota tacoma?

I was told that Tocoma timing belts had to be changed around 90k before they broke, damaging the engine. Is this even true? And how much trouble is it to do it yourself given mechanic experience?Do you have to remove the engine to change a timing belt on a 2000 toyota tacoma?
DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF. Seriously, I think your Tocoma should have the 3.4 liter V6, which I have in my 2002 4Runner. Its a big production to do it. I had it done at the dealer. Good plan, right? Guess what - After driving about 150 miles, it fell off! They didn't tighten the crank shaft properly (those were the words of the mechanic I took it too near where it died, as well as the dealer, after they checked it out). Well, too bad for the dealer, they had to come pick it up (140 miles door to door each way for them) and then they did have to yank the engine out to fix the mess.

Its an expensive service at the dealer (about $500, if I remember correctly), but you can probably get your local mechanic to do it for less.Do you have to remove the engine to change a timing belt on a 2000 toyota tacoma?
I have changed the timing belt on a 91 Toyota Camry, we didn't have to remove the engine but it was a big mess. You can order or buy the book at parts stores such as O'Reiley's or AutoZone, the book will tell you.

If you have the maintenence book, it's step by step. I had never changed one before, but I did it with the book, and a little help from family members. I think it is true about damaging the engine. IF you can't afford the labor for the fix (which IS expensive), buy the book for $15 and do it yourself :)

How much should I pay for a timing belt change for a 2003 audi A4?

I have an Audi a4 with 57K miles, and it is due for 60K service. The dealer asks for $800, and it doesn't include timing belt.

My question is how much should I pay for replacing timing belt? and is $800 a fair price to charge for 60k service?

Thanks. How much should I pay for a timing belt change for a 2003 audi A4?
The scheduled Audi time is 2.6 hours for timing belt change + parts.$800 is expensive for 60,000 service.Regards Mick. How much should I pay for a timing belt change for a 2003 audi A4?
I have a 2004 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro with 76K Miles and just had my timing belt replaced. At the same time, I replaced the water pump, serpentine belt, 4 spark plugs and cylinder 1 coil - $615.23

If you replace the timing belt, you might just as well do the water pump and serpentine belt.

Sure 800 is alright you could probable find it cheaper but since its from the dealer its usally worth it. I would just do it myself and save 700 something dollars.
    dunno
Well, that particular motor has zero clearance, which means if the belt breaks, lets say at 50 mph, you will be looking at...

The timing belt on my 98 Audi A4 just failed, at about 50 MPH. I

haven't taken it to the dealer yet (Scared! They said possibly from

    $1000 to $4500 depending).

Of course, if you have the tools and knowledge, you can buy the part and do it yourself.

What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?

This is a major maintenance I got to do and I'd like more information on it.

How important is it to do it early, versus being 10k to 30k over recommended mileage?

Was it fixed right away or did it need adjustments afterwards?

How did the car feel with the new timing belt?

Did you select a particular brand of a timing belt?

What other repairs did you do simultaneously to cut down on cost?

That should keep you busy for a hot minute dear answerer! What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?
Depending on the climate that the car is driven in , I would say that the timing belt should be replaced no later than 90,000 miles. This is to prevent having a timing belt failure that could cause more damage... Especially on a 2.5 DOHC engine, I believe that those are considered ';interference'; engines and if the belt brakes during running, you will most likely bend several valves and that requires cylinder head repair...

There is a possibility that the water pump is driven by the timing belt and if so the labor would be less to replace the pump at the same time as the timing belt as compared to doing it at a different date by itself...

As far as adjustments, the timing belt has a self adjust feature and should not require adjustment..

I always use Gates belts, Just my preference based on my experience..What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?
Sincere thanks to all who gave advice,

    I changed it at 84K - mechanic's comment ';it was old, good time to change it.';

Cost 421 USD for belt, waterpump and labor.

Estimates I had for just the timing belt: dealer 450, AXP 300, Another Mech 550.

For Subarus, the maintenance schedule recommends replacing the timing belt at 105,000 miles.

This is not something to skimp on. Is it going to fail exactly at 105k? Not likely. Is it worth risking your engine? Your call. If the timing belt breaks, you will be looking at new cylinder heads and a engine rebuild. Your car isn't going to feel any different with a new timing belt, unless your timing happened to be off beforehand. This is just a wear item that needs to be replaced. There's no ';adjustments'; unless you screw up the timing. There's really no benefit to going to anything other than the OEM belt, unless you just like the peace of mind a kevlar belt might give you. You'll also want to replace the water pump, the oil pump, timing belt tensioner, and idler pulleys while you're in there.

I don't consider this the easiest task for the average shadetree mechanic, so depending on your skill level, you might want to consider going to a mechanic for this particular maintenance.
It is very important to have the timing belt changed. If it breaks while driving it could damage your engine. Take it to the dealer they will do it right. Follow that maintenance schedule in your manual that is all you need to do. Subaru will warranty the parts for 1 year. If within the one year that car is damaged due to say a faulty part that was installed during a service Subaru covers that. No other garage will do that
Timing belt replacement is recommended for cars with 60K miles (for 1997 and older cars) ...or at 90K miles for 1998 cars and newer) When a timing belt breaks, your engine stops. That is why it should be done before that risk occurs.
